Worldwide economic situation worsening, unemployment rising, desperate measures.
author=Holbert link=topic=3297.msg66446#msg66446 date=1236928814
I have been spending money frivilously in an attempt to stimulate the economy. It's okay guys, I got it from here.
awesome gr8 thx maen
Now, addressing the topic seriously... I feel like I lack the knowledge to discuss the topic seriously, despite majoring in business and being a news hound, only because I don't really really understand or have an opinion on the economic theories behind it. All I hear are others' opinions, particularly news commentators' opinions, and, well, opinions are like assholes... I hope I don't come off as an idiot- I just prefer to think that I'd better just listen to others' opinions some more before I begin spouting ideas.
One thing I can say is that staying in college for a few more years doesn't feel like a bad decision at the moment, although tuition's going to ramp up more I'm sure.
How much time do you spend on the computer?
Not too much right now- I spend time to check e-mail and do homework, but I prefer playing video games on the *home consoles*, yo. I'd say maybe a couple hours a week of recreational use of the computer, although this ramps up considerably when I occasionally start playing a PC game (like when I played the Witcher a few months ago).
Spring's a comin'-What's your plans?
Finishing up spring classes now, and working on term papers for some classes. I also plan to start working on a new amateur game that I'm very excited about, and maybe start writing a novel if I get the go-ahead from my college to use it for a project. I'll also probably drive back to my parents' home and help them with some summer projects, but yeah, I'll probably never leave the state of Iowa for another 2 or so years until some vacation or something pops up :P.
Alcohol and/or Drugs.
My feelings are mixed on legalizing 'hard drugs,' but marijuana ought to just be a no-brainer. I don't smoke it myself, not for really any reason except I just never decided to, but I feel like it's not that big of a deal. Maybe with the economic recession, other states in the U.S. will move in the direction California has headed and legalize/tax-the-hell-out-of-it.
As for other drugs, while I understand that the War on Drugs (big proper noun) hasn't effectively ended them and never will, I think it does have a positive impact (I need to learn more to back this up or reveal it as false though). When I think about the effects of some drugs like meth, especially the effects on others who don't make the choice to use the drugs, I feel like some prevention is good. Again, though, raises problems with what government Ought to do versus what government Can do.
As for me, never done anything except alcohol. Nowadays my stomach is so weak I generally don't do much except sip beers, because I'm so awesome like that 8).

Your Own "WTF" Moments
I played the Endless Setlist 2 on Rock Band 2 for about 5-6 hours. I had just finished Bodhisattva and had only five more songs to go. My sister and her fiance visited. We ordered pizza and watched the movie Cars. During the movie, one of them somehow manipulated the X-Box 360 controller sitting next to them to cause me to exit the gig and lose all the progress I made on the ES2.
When I realized this after they left, I first became very incredulous, then very angry, and then I threw my cheap plastic guitar across the room. But then I read more about the ES2 and learned that all I got for finishing it was some crappy icon. I didn't care so much then :).

Can Fangames Be Good?
I make these general observations about fan games.
1) Yes, they CAN be good. Some good ones exist.. even, gasp, Final Fantasy fan games!
2) They often aren't good. In my opinion, completely unsupported by anything except the amount of games I've seen or played, more games that are *original* are good and more fan games are bad. My guess is that fan games tend to be more rushed in creation and have less care taken in storytelling, or in other departments like battle system, dungeons, dialogue, graphics, etc.

How do you guys come up with witty quotes?
Not sure. I feel differently than a lot of people on this topic- I don't think you should just go watch a bunch of movies and TV and then get inspired to write witty banter. If you're going to do a bunch of Airplane and House jokes, I'm probably going to be bored. But if you're going to watch these shows and try to actively learn the tropes and styles that make the jokes effective, maybe that will work... but you still have to transfer these jokes to a different medium entirely. A visual joke from Airplane like the Girl Scout brawl may not translate well to a 2D video game played on a computer.
A sense of humor can be developed, but I don't think you can prescribe a method to do it, and I think it relies a bit on an initial ability or attitude. If anything, just follow the age-old adage of "write what you know." For amateur games, I think the most funny ones are community games like Erave's Easy Mac series or maybe absurd games like The Most Stupidest Game Ever (Re-Duh) (maybe).
More often, I find myself writing witty banter between random NPCs not relevant to the story; I like writing silly stuff for them because of the fact that they're not so relevant, but I follow basic rules like good spelling and punctuation, and try to write 'smart' humor (and I enjoy limited success, I think.) For more important characters, all humor's got to be tied to either situations relevant to the main plot or to the characters' own personalities, opinions, and reactions. Anyways, all of this is the best description I can give for how I would create witty quotes...

Nudity in Games
In amateur games, I usually cannot take the game seriously if it tries to seriously depict nudity. Then again, my experience has been limited mostly to crappy RM2K/3 games, so who knows? Maybe someone can do nudity tastefully?
But even then, what's the point? Is the nudity supposed to advance the story (is it necessary?) Is the nudity actually supposed to be erotic (can stumpy little cartoon people do that?)
The one exception I remember was good horror RPG done in RM2K called the Longest Ribbon; I remember a boss encounter in which the female protagonist had to fight a nude clone of herself. Even then, it wasn't 'hot' (just two stumpy little people with crappy RM2K *punch* *punch* animations), and the fight made sense- the clone was an alien representation of this house's evil, didn't say a word of dialogue, and was meant just to be scary in the Weird sense (which is something the game did very well in other areas, like in a freaky-scary spoof of Don Miguel's sample game).
As for nudity in commercial games, well, again, it's usually kinda stupid and pointless anyways- put there to be shocking, and distracting from the core purpose of the game

Bad points of one big 'inside' map for towns
author=Neophyte link=topic=3223.msg63674#msg63674 date=1235668727
I will say that having a larger map and placing every house or room in it has some benefits. It's mostly good for dungeon design or just good organization in general.
I agree with this; getting organized helps me stay efficient and get more accomplished, and I feel this does this. However, in order to stay efficient and make a game quickly, I have to guess the amount of space needed to prevent the player from scrolling to see areas they shouldn't see. I'm not very good at guessing this, so I often overestimate the amount of space needed and create big maps with too much empty space between rooms, such that it becomes difficult to spot individual rooms when I'm looking for something in particular. However, I think this is less of an issue if you're more experienced with the engine you're using to create maps, and know how much space you need to create the illusion of separate rooms.
Back in blue...
hay guys im new!
I'm sorry for sucking and leaving abruptly like I often do, but now I'm reappearing to begin work on a new specific game project. It's going to be a shorter RPG, and I hope to learn RMVX to make my game legally, although it's unlikely I'll really take advantage of the better graphics or RGSS2. I hope the game can be redeemed through a decent battle system, decent dungeons, mediocre/acceptable graphics, and a fresh new story, e.g. nobody in your party, nor anyone you fight, ever actually uses a sword, and yet it avoids a cyberpunk-dystopian setting. It ought to be good if I can finish it.
About me: I am a college student based in the flatlands of Iowa. My hobbies are playing guitar, drinking, writing, watching TV, and of course playing video games. I play a lot less RPGs now than I used to, preferring more action-type games that can be played in short bursts of time.
To conclude, the Romantic period was a time of great imagination and bold new frontiers for the writers and artists of the British isles, and bravely pushed forward innovative ideas and themes that forever changed the face of literature.
